The following is taken from the Subject Assessment Guidelines for CAT:
“Motivation for Performance Assessment Task in CAT
Bearing in mind that assessment provides the evidence of the learner’s skill, knowledge, attitudes and values, the performance assessment task provides an opportunity to assess the developmental outcomes, critical outcomes and all the learning outcomes and assessment standards for the subject in a real-life project. By definition LO3 can only be assessed in depth in a project, making the Performance Assessment Task (PAT) a necessity for this subject.
The project allows the learner to demonstrate his information management and integrated end-user computer applications skills as well as problem solving skills in an authentic scenario. Although the learner will demonstrate his end-user computer applications skills, the performance assessment task allows his information management skills to be assessed in depth.“
The focus of PAT is thus LO3. Learners must be able to show that they can work effectively with information (finding the relevant information, processing the relevant information and presenting the information in an appropriate manner). The information that needs to be researched does not necessarily need to be about LO1 but it can be. LO2 is clearly helpful and important to the learner in the PAT since learners work with the information while they use the application packages.
The task must be centered around one theme and must be completed during the course of the year - in the case of the Grade 10’s it can be completed in the third and last terms.
Remember that the PAT needs to be a large and comprehensive task especially considering that it counts as much as the six items that are prescribed for marks in the Program of Assessment.
